Mann Govt Pushes Rural Infrastructure With Mehangowal Bridge

CHANDIGARH, Dec. 17 — The Punjab government has launched reconstruction of a long-neglected bridge in Mehangowal, marking a key step in its rural infrastructure drive, officials and local leaders said Tuesday.

The bridge, which connects nearly 50 villages, had remained in a severely damaged condition for decades, disrupting emergency services, school travel and agricultural transport. The new project aims to restore access and support economic activity in the region.

AAP MLA from the area said the project reflects Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s focus on village-level development.

“This bridge is not just concrete and steel,” the MLA said. “It connects people to hospitals, schools and opportunities. Our government is committed to development in every village.”

Government officials said the bridge will be built using updated technology to ensure durability and withstand seasonal flooding. The work is expected to be completed within the approved timeline.

Teachers, social activists and residents said the damaged bridge had isolated communities during heavy rains, often cutting off entire villages.

“Children struggled to reach school, and patients suffered,” said a local schoolteacher. “For decades, our requests were ignored. This action restores faith in governance.”

Women and elderly residents said safe transport had been a long-standing concern, especially during medical emergencies.

The bridge project is part of a broader plan to improve roads, power supply and water access in rural Punjab, officials said. Experts noted that improved infrastructure can help slow youth migration by creating better living conditions and local employment.

Young residents have also welcomed the project online, calling it a practical step toward development.

“This shows the government is listening,” said Gurpreet Kaur, a college student from the area. “We hope more such projects follow.”

Officials said several similar infrastructure projects are planned across the state in the coming months.
