Mohali Mayor Seeks CM’s Intervention in Solid Waste Crisis

by TheReportingTimes

MOHALI, July 2 Amid mounting garbage piles and rising public health concerns, Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, requesting immediate intervention to address the city’s worsening solid waste management crisis.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Sidhu urged the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) to be directed to identify and allot an environmentally approved site for scientific waste disposal without delay. He said the absence of a sanctioned landfill or processing facility is undermining Mohali’s reputation as a planned city.

“Despite being a modern urban centre, Mohali still lacks a proper site for waste management. Garbage is accumulating in residential and commercial areas, posing serious health risks,” said Sidhu.

Efforts by the municipal corporation to acquire land for a landfill have repeatedly failed due to village-level opposition and the lack of viable locations, the mayor said. He warned that the current situation could lead to long-term environmental and public health consequences if not addressed urgently.

Sidhu also called for strict adherence to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines and provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. “Urban planning reforms must include integrated waste management systems from the outset,” he said, adding that the issue demands both administrative will and coordinated policy support from the state.

The mayor’s appeal comes as the city grapples with a growing waste load driven by urban expansion, population growth, and the absence of infrastructure to handle solid waste in a sustainable manner.
