Mohali, September 19: A woman in Mohali has alleged she received death threats and obscene morphed photographs were circulated online after she criticised Punjabi singer Babbu Maan over his remarks about a Khanda tattoo. Police have booked three individuals in connection with the case.
According to officials, the cyber crime cell acted on the woman’s complaint and registered an FIR against Rajkaran of Ganganagar (Rajasthan), Parvez Khan of Patiala, and Varinder Singh of Ludhiana under provisions of the IT Act and NSA. Police said all three accused are absconding, and raids are being carried out to trace them.
The complainant told authorities that she first took her grievance to the Akal Takht Sahib before approaching police. “I spoke out because I felt what he said was an insult to Sikhism and the Khanda,” she said, questioning why a Punjabi singer “would be insensitive to Sikh religious symbols if a foreign artist lacked knowledge of Sikh history.”
The controversy stems from a recent interview in which Babbu Maan spoke about getting a Khanda tattoo on his arm from an English artist, claiming the artist allegedly completed three days of work in one day under the influence of alcohol. The woman responded through a live video on social media, which triggered a backlash from some of the singer’s followers.
Police investigations later verified social media accounts and phone numbers linked to the threats. Officials confirmed that obscene morphed photos of the complainant were also circulated widely. The woman further alleged that “similar threats” were sent from accounts originating in Pakistan.
She lodged complaints through emails and letters to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, before reporting the matter to cyber police.
Authorities have assured that action will be taken against all those responsible. “Further investigations are underway, and strict steps will follow against anyone found guilty,” a police officer said.
