MOHALI, Aug. 23 — A 25-year-old man from Jagraon was killed and his two cousins were seriously injured when their jeep overturned at the sharp S-curve between Sectors 70 and 77 early Saturday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Jasbir Singh, who had returned from Malaysia a few days ago, where he was pursuing higher studies. His cousins, Jaspooran Singh and Gevan Singh, sustained critical injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Mohali.
Family members said the three were headed toward Sector 22, Chandigarh, where they run a mobile phone shop. Jasbir was scheduled to fly back abroad in two days.
His uncle, Jagpal Singh, expressed anger at the administration, saying repeated warnings about the dangerous curve had been ignored. “Despite several accidents on this steep curve, the administration is in a deep slumber. Many lives have been lost here, but nothing has changed,” he said.
The S-curve, located near Gurdwara Mata Sunder Kaur, has been tagged as a high-risk spot for years. Residents and gurdwara management have long demanded that the road be straightened. In April 2022, a senior GMADA official had said the authority had received consent from the gurdwara committee for relocation of the shrine and that a project report would be prepared within weeks. The official also stated that estimates would be made and tenders floated for realignment of the stretch.
However, locals say no progress has been made since then. “The file has remained on paper while accidents continue to claim lives,” said a resident.
Police said an investigation has been launched into the latest crash.
