Chandigarh, Feb 19: The digital legacy of the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala continues to expand as his YouTube subscriber count has reached 29.8 million, nearly equaling the 29.9 million followers on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official channel. This surge in digital popularity comes as the singer’s parents, Balkaur Singh and Charan Kaur, initiate a legal battle to recover approximately Rs 35 crore in unpaid royalties from a prominent music company.
The family recently pursued criminal charges against One Digital Entertainment Pvt Ltd and its associates, Shabir Momin and Gurpreet Singh. Mansa police registered a First Information Report (FIR) following a sit-in protest led by Moosewala’s parents outside the Senior Superintendent of Police office. The legal action includes allegations of criminal breach of trust, forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy.
During the demonstration in early February, Balkaur Singh shared the personal financial strain caused by the dispute. “I am left with only Rs 100 in my bank account despite the massive ongoing revenue from my son’s music,” Singh stated. He maintained that the company has withheld over Rs 30 crore earned across various digital platforms since his son’s assassination nearly four years ago.
The conflict has also sparked a public disagreement with music producer Bunty Bains. While Bains was mentioned in initial complaints, he was not named in the FIR. Bains asserted that he never handled the financial accounts or royalty payments, noting that the dispute remains strictly between the family and Shabir Momin. He declared that he prefers direct Madialogue over the social media campaigns he believes are being used to damage his reputation.
Despite the ongoing litigation, Moosewala’s channel remains a powerhouse in the music industry. The regular release of archival content and new tracks continues to attract millions of viewers, sustaining a growth rate that rivals India’s highest-profile political figures. Representatives for Shabir Momin and Gurpreet Singh have not yet provided a response to the allegations.
