Muktsar Police Arrest 539 in 100-Day Drug Crackdown

by TheReportingTimes

Muktsar, June 9 — In an aggressive push against narcotics, the Muktsar district police have registered 311 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 539 accused in the last 100 days, officials confirmed on Monday.

The action is part of Punjab’s ongoing “war against drugs” initiative. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akhil Chaudhary detailed the operations, revealing the seizure of 41.11 kg of opium, 2.33 kg of heroin, 12 quintals of poppy husk, 64,879 intoxicant pills and capsules, 64 bottles of sedative syrup, and ₹6.63 lakh in alleged drug proceeds.

In a further blow to the drug network, police froze assets worth ₹1.82 crore belonging to 13 known traffickers. Additionally, eight illegal constructions linked to these individuals were demolished with the cooperation of the civil administration.

“We are targeting both supply and demand,” SSP Chaudhary said. “It’s not just about arrests — we’re also helping people recover.” He said that in the same period, 555 drug addicts were assisted in receiving medication through OOAT (Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment) clinics, and 264 others were admitted to de-addiction centers.

The district police have also conducted awareness seminars in schools and colleges to educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse.

SSP Chaudhary emphasized the need for sustained community involvement. “This fight is not ours alone. Public support is essential,” he said, urging citizens to remain alert and report suspicious activity.

Special police teams have also been assigned to monitor those released on bail in drug-related cases, ensuring follow-up and preventing reoffending, officials added.

The campaign in Muktsar reflects a broader state-level strategy aimed at dismantling drug networks while also focusing on rehabilitation and prevention — a dual approach that authorities hope will lead to long-term change.
