Murder charge stuns Punjab family after daughter’s death in Canada

by TheReportingTimes

LUDHIANA, Nov 28 — What began as a tragic road accident has turned into a murder investigation for a family in Gujjarwal village, after Canadian police accused a relative of killing Mandeep Kaur and staging the scene to hide the crime.

Delta Police arrested Gurjot Singh Khaira, the younger brother of Mandeep’s husband, and charged him with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains. Authorities allege he moved her body and attempted to conceal her death.

Mandeep’s father, Jagdev Singh Jaggie, said the family had been grieving what they believed was a fatal crash. “We were told it was an accident, and we accepted that,” he said. “But after the cremation, everything changed.”

Jagdev Singh said he learned of the new allegations on November 25, the same day Crown Counsel approved the murder charge. “I found out only after I came back from immersing her ashes,” he said.

Mandeep had moved to Canada six years ago for studies and married just seven months ago into a family from Lodhiwal near Sidhwan Bet. Jagdev Singh said he was living elsewhere in Canada with his son when the supposed accident occurred.

Her mother, Jaswinder Kaur, is devastated and says she wants a clearer picture of what happened. The family now fears navigating a complex legal process abroad on their own.

Jagdev Singh said he intends to return to Canada soon. “I need to uncover the truth behind my daughter’s death,” he said.
