New Delhi, May 14: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has voiced its firm disapproval of the derogatory comments directed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, calling for society to show respect to women serving in the armed forces.
In a statement following the public outrage over remarks reportedly made by Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar stressed the importance of honouring women in uniform.
Although she did not name Shah directly, Rahatkar condemned the “unfortunate” remarks that were deemed offensive and unacceptable.
“This is a deeply hurtful statement that tarnishes the dignity of women,” Rahatkar said on social media platform X. “It is not only a disrespect to women in our society but also an insult to the daughters of the nation who are contributing significantly to the country’s security.”
Rahathkar further praised Colonel Qureshi’s service to the nation. “Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is a courageous and dedicated officer, a proud daughter of this nation admired by all Indians. The country stands with brave women like her,” she added.
Shah’s remarks, which were reportedly captured in a video released by the Congress, stirred public backlash. In the video, Shah allegedly made controversial comments, saying, “Jinhone humari betiyon ke sindoor ujade the… humne unhiki behen bhej kar ke unki aisi ki taisi karwayi,” referring to an act of vengeance related to the removal of sindoor (vermilion) from Indian women’s foreheads.
Following the widespread criticism, Shah offered a public apology, stating, “If my words have hurt society and religion, I am ready to apologize ten times.”
Colonel Qureshi, who was part of the tri-services team addressing the media on Operation Sindoor alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, has earned admiration for her role in the military’s response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
