New Delhi Urges Diplomatic Path Following US-Iran Truce Announcement

Global energy security cited as priority as India endorses two-week cessation of strikes

New Delhi, April 8: The Government of India has issued a supportive response to the two-week double-sided ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, statingthe need for a permanent end to the crisis. Ministry of External Affairs officials stated Wednesday that the move aligns with India’s long-standing position that peaceful negotiations must take precedence over armed conflict to safeguard global economic interests.

According to the MEA, the ongoing hostilities have had a detrimental impact on global energy supplies and have caused “immense suffering” to the civilian population. Indian authorities affirmed their expectation that the ceasefire will lead to the immediate and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry asserted that the free movement of oil and trade through this corridor is a non-negotiable requirement for international economic stability.

“The government underscores the broader humanitarian and economic impact of the conflict,” the MEA stated, adding that it remains committed to supporting efforts that ensure regional peace. Officials affirmed that India expects all parties to respect international maritime laws to prevent further disruption to the flow of global commerce.

The shift in U.S. policy came after President Donald Trump declared on social media that military objectives had been met and that a 10-point Iranian proposal would serve as the foundation for upcoming talks. Trump affirmed that the decision to halt strikes was influenced by requests from Pakistani leadership and was contingent upon the complete opening of maritime channels. India has declared its hope that these “Islamabad Talks” and subsequent diplomatic efforts will result in a definitive agreement for the Middle East.
