Guwahati, Dec. 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new Integrated Terminal 2 building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport, a Rs 4,000-crore facility designed to handle more than 13 million passengers each year.

“The Northeast is becoming a major driver of India’s growth, and modern infrastructure like this airport will support tourism, trade and connectivity,” Modi said during a walkthrough of the terminal.

Officials said the terminal is part of a larger Rs 5,000-crore airport development project, which includes Rs 1,000 crore dedicated to Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities aimed at strengthening aviation services in the region.

Spread across 1.4 lakh square metres, the terminal’s design reflects Assam’s biodiversity and cultural traditions, incorporating natural motifs and locally inspired architecture, according to the Airports Authority of India.

An airport official said the facility is expected to ease congestion and improve passenger experience. “With this terminal, Guwahati is positioned as a major aviation hub for the Northeast and a gateway to Southeast Asia,” the official said.

The airport currently serves as the busiest aviation center in the region, and authorities expect passenger traffic to rise sharply with improved connectivity and expanded capacity.

The inauguration comes as part of the Centre’s broader push to modernise airport infrastructure across India, with a focus on underserved and strategically important regions such as the Northeast.
