New Mohali IT City–Kurali bypass opens to traffic

Mohali, Dec 22: Vehicular traffic was opened on the Mohali IT City–Kurali expressway on Monday, marking a key milestone in the Chandigarh–Ambala highway project and easing congestion on one of the Tricity’s busiest road corridors.

The six-lane expressway, spanning 31.23 km, has been designed as a high-embankment bypass to offload traffic from Mohali, Kharar and Kurali. Though the distance between Mohali and Kurali remains largely the same, officials said the corridor reduces commute time by about 45 minutes.

“With uninterrupted access and a speed limit of 100 kmph, the expressway offers smoother and safer travel,” an NHAI official said.

The ₹1,525.3-crore project includes grade-separated crossings throughout the stretch, with multiple flyovers, underpasses and bridges to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow. A toll plaza has been set up near Bajheri village but has not yet been commissioned.

Officials said the new corridor would divert heavy inter-state traffic away from Airport Road, reducing congestion, pollution and travel delays in Mohali and surrounding areas.

The expressway connects IT City Chowk to Kurali via the Kurali-Siswan road and forms Package-2 of the ₹3,166.96-crore Chandigarh–Ambala six-lane highway. The remaining 30-km stretch is about 75% complete and is expected to open by May 2026.

Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to strengthen the Tricity ring-road network and improve connectivity between Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
