CHANDIGARH, Dec 4 — With opposition parties alleging that their candidates were prevented from filing nomination papers, the Punjab State Election Commission has ordered mandatory videography of the nomination process for upcoming rural body polls.
The complaints claimed that candidates faced physical obstruction and that key officials — including those tasked with issuing NOCs and receiving forms — were absent from their offices. The Commission said the videos would serve as a record in case of disputes.
State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhari told Deputy Commissioners to maintain strict oversight. “We will take serious action if any officer fails to perform their duty,” he said.
Nomination papers for 22 Zila Parishads and 153 Panchayat Samitis close on Thursday. By Wednesday evening, officials had received 285 Zila Parishad and 1,713 Panchayat Samiti nominations.
The Commission also reminded districts that all returning officers and related staff must remain on duty during office hours to ensure a smooth and secure filing process.
