NRI shoots at social worker in Phillaur; police issue lookout notice

Phillaur, Oct 19:  A social worker narrowly escaped an armed attack in Punjab’s Phillaur on Saturday night when an NRI youth allegedly opened fire outside his home, leaving one of his associates seriously injured. The accused, identified as Rahul, a resident of Lakkar Mandi, had reportedly returned to India recently after spending time abroad.

The incident took place at Atwal Colony, near the residence of social worker Mandeep Singh Dosanjh, known locally for his charitable and welfare work. According to eyewitnesses, the accused arrived at Dosanjh’s house under the guise of discussing a property deal. After asking Dosanjh to step outside, he suddenly pulled out a pistol and aimed it at him.

Dosanjh’s aide, Sanjeev Kumar alias Pandit, intervened to stop the attacker. During the struggle, Rahul fired a shot that struck Sanjeev in the leg. The shooter then fled the scene in a black Thar SUV along with an accomplice before police arrived.

Locals and police personnel rushed the injured Sanjeev to Phillaur Civil Hospital, where doctors referred him to Ludhiana for advanced treatment due to the severity of his wound. His condition is said to be critical but stable.

Upon receiving information, DSP Sarwan Singh Bal and SHO Aman Saini reached the scene with a police team. The area was cordoned off, and CCTV footage was reviewed to trace the suspect’s movements.

DSP Bal confirmed that the shooter was an NRI. “The accused has been identified as Rahul, who recently returned from abroad. A lookout circular has been issued across all airports to prevent him from leaving the country,” the officer said.

Police have registered a case under sections of attempt to murder and illegal possession of arms. Multiple teams have been constituted to track down the accused, with raids continuing across Phillaur and neighbouring districts.

Authorities have appealed to residents to share any information about the suspect or the vehicle used in the escape. “The investigation is moving quickly, and we will ensure that the accused is arrested soon,” a senior police officer said.

The attack has sparked outrage in the local community, as Dosanjh is regarded as a respected figure actively involved in social welfare initiatives. Residents have urged the police to take firm action and ensure the safety of community leaders in the area.
