Paragliding at Bir-Billing to resume from Sept 16 after 2-month ban

by TheReportingTimes

Kangra, Sept 14 — Paragliding activities at Bir-Billing, the world-renowned adventure sports site, will resume from September 16 after remaining suspended for two months during the monsoon. The Baijnath administration had imposed a complete ban in July to avoid mishaps during heavy rains and landslides.

Baijnath SDM Sankalap Gautam said the take-off site at Billing has been cleared of wild grass, while the Public Works Department has restored the 14-km Bir-Billing road damaged by landslides and uprooted trees. With safety guidelines in place, both solo and tandem flights will be operational for tourists from Tuesday.

On an average, 200 pilots take off from Billing daily and land at Chogan, the designated site. Taxi drivers, guides and hotel owners welcomed the decision, saying the ban had left hotels and homestays nearly deserted.

Bir-Billing, which hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2024, is known as the “Paragliding Capital of India” and attracts enthusiasts from across the globe. The Billing take-off point, at 8,000 ft, offers one of the most scenic flights, with the landing site at 4,500 ft in Bir village — a hub for eco-tourism, meditation and spiritual studies.
