NEW DELHI, June 6, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada from June 15 to 17 to attend the G7 Summit, marking a revival in diplomatic ties between India and Canada after years of strain.

The visit is at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who took office in March this year, replacing Justin Trudeau. Modi confirmed the trip on social media, ending speculation over his participation in the summit — his first since 2019.

“Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month,” Modi posted on X, referring to a recent call with Carney.

In a notable shift in tone from the Trudeau era, Modi added, “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

The G7 — comprising the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada — invites select partner countries, and India, though not a member, regularly features as a key guest nation due to its global economic role.

Under Trudeau, India-Canada relations reached a low point, especially after Trudeau accused India of involvement in the June 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar — a charge New Delhi firmly denied.

Carney’s outreach and invitation are seen as an attempt to reset bilateral relations, with the G7 summit offering an opportunity for both sides to re-engage on common issues.

International summits like the G7 allow the host country considerable discretion in shaping the agenda, extending invitations, and framing the summit’s diplomatic tone.
