by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Sept 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on Tuesday to take stock of the devastation caused by recent floods and landslides, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

Modi is scheduled to leave Delhi at 11 a.m. after casting his vote in the Vice Presidential election. His first stop will be Himachal Pradesh, where he will conduct an aerial survey of flood-hit and landslide-affected areas. Around 1:30 p.m., the Prime Minister will reach Kangra, where he will meet state government officials and chair a high-level review of the situation.

Officials said Modi will also interact in Kangra with families impacted by the disaster, as well as with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and Aapda Mitra teams engaged in rescue and relief.

The Prime Minister will then turn to Punjab, beginning with an aerial survey of flood-affected districts at around 3 p.m. He is expected to arrive in Gurdaspur by 4:15 p.m. to meet senior state officials and assess ground-level damage. According to sources, he will also meet families displaced by floods and interact with teams involved in relief and rehabilitation.

“The Prime Minister’s direct review is aimed at closely monitoring relief and rehabilitation efforts to support the people of the two states during this difficult time,” a PMO official said.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who toured Punjab earlier on Modi’s directions, briefed him on the extent of damage. Chouhan told the Prime Minister that widespread illegal mining along riverbanks had weakened embankments, leading to breaches during the floods. He also reported large-scale destruction of standing crops and cultivable land, underscoring the urgent need for long-term preventive measures.
