FARIDKOT, Dec 10, 2025 — Police in Faridkot have stepped in to reassure a labourer family that abruptly left their village after winning ₹1.5 crore in the Punjab State Lottery, fearing they would be targeted for extortion.
The family of Nasib Kaur from Saideke village locked their home and disappeared after learning they had hit the jackpot. They switched off their phones as well, deepening concern among neighbours who had seen their house shuttered for days.
Investigators said the fear surged soon after the family confirmed their win. Ram Singh, Kaur’s husband, had purchased the ₹200 lottery ticket at the insistence of seller Raju, who later tracked them down and accompanied them to the lottery office in Chandigarh to verify the ticket.
Once the police located the family, a team led by the Faridkot SHO met them on Wednesday evening. “We have assured them of full safety and support,” DSP Tarlochan Singh said. “They should not be afraid. If any unknown person contacts them, they must inform the police right away.”
The reassurance came as the family continued to stay away from their village, unsure how to handle the sudden fortune that has brought them both hope and fear.
