Postal reform from Oct. 1: Registration tied to Speed Post

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Aug. 31 — The Union government has announced a major reform in postal services, making Speed Post the sole channel for registered mail beginning Oct. 1.

Under the revised system, the registration service — widely used for delivering statutory documents such as summons and notices — will no longer be available with ordinary categories of mail. Instead, it will function only as a value-added feature linked to Speed Post, covering both letters and parcels.

“The revised framework reflects the government’s commitment to modernising the postal system and better responding to market demands,” the Department of Posts said in a notification. Officials noted the change is aimed at ensuring secure, addressee-specific delivery in line with customer and legal requirements.

The overhaul is part of efforts to streamline domestic mail services provided by India Post, which officials described as a necessary step to adapt to “evolving customer needs.”

Detailed guidelines on operations, tariffs and service terms for Speed Post and its value-added features will be issued separately. The notification has already been circulated to statutory and constitutional bodies, central ministries and departments, state governments, union territories, NITI Aayog and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
