Kapurthala, June 9 – Kapurthala Police have arrested the prime suspect in the daring HDFC Bank robbery that occurred in Rawalpindi on May 30. The police recovered ₹13.10 lakh in cash and a country-made pistol reportedly used in the crime.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Naveen Singla said the accused, Gurminder Singh of Kahlwan village in Jalandhar district, was nabbed during a raid on June 7 following a swift and coordinated investigation involving technical surveillance and field inputs.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, who confirmed that Singh confessed to his involvement during interrogation. “His disclosure led to the recovery of stolen cash, and we have identified his two accomplices. Raids are underway to arrest them,” said Toora.

The robbery took place around 3 pm on May 30 when three masked men stormed into the HDFC Bank branch in Rawalpindi and fled with a substantial amount of cash in a white car bearing altered number plates.

An FIR was registered under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Rawalpindi police station. Special investigation teams from the CIA, Phagwara Police, and Kapurthala Detective Wing were quickly formed.

DIG Singla praised the prompt and effective response by the police teams. “This arrest and recovery underline our commitment to cracking down on organised crime. Public cooperation and inter-agency collaboration were key in this success,” he said.

SSP Toora assured that the department remains fully committed to tracking down the remaining suspects and ensuring justice.
