PU Staff to Receive Pending Pay Arrears After Nearly a Decade

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, March 27 — Panjab University (PU) employees are finally set to receive their long-overdue pay arrears, pending since the implementation of the Punjab Sixth Pay Commission and the central Seventh Pay Commission in January 2016.

PU vice-chancellor Renu Vig, during a meeting with employees at the Law Auditorium on Wednesday evening, announced that ₹175.51 crore in arrears would be disbursed by the end of this month. “The Union ministry of education recently sent the necessary letters to the University Grants Commission (UGC), clearing the final hurdle for the payments,” she said.

The arrears cover revised salary scales for 1,515 non-teaching staff and 1,378 teachers, accounting for the period from January 2016 to March and December 2022, respectively. Faculty members are expected to receive between ₹6 lakh and ₹16 lakh after deductions, depending on their post and years of service.

Despite the pay commissions being rolled out in January 2016, PU adopted the Sixth Pay Commission for non-teaching staff only in March 2022. Similarly, teaching staff began receiving salaries under the Seventh Pay Commission in January 2023. However, the arrears for the prior years remained unpaid until now.

With the funds now secured, employees are expected to receive the long-pending dues in their accounts soon.
