Punjab AAP MLAs bring MGNREGA workers’ letters to Assembly, call on Centre to act

Chandigarh, December 30: To showcase the struggles of rural labourers, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs on Monday carried thousands of letters from over 10 lakh MGNREGA worker families into the Punjab Assembly during its special session.

The letters, written by workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), outline delays in wage payments, irregular work allocation, and the financial difficulties faced by households reliant on the scheme. Several MGNREGA workers were present at the Assembly to lend their voice to the campaign.

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, said the letters will be sent directly to the Prime Minister to urge the Centre to ensure timely release of funds and address persistent issues affecting scheme implementation.

“Delays in central fund releases have created wage backlogs and interrupted work schedules, leaving many families without income,” the state government said, noting that workers often face uncertainty and financial strain due to late payments.

AAP leaders described the initiative as a step to amplify the concerns of rural labourers and apply pressure on the Central government for prompt funding. They reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to defending the rights and entitlements of MGNREGA workers.
