CHANDIGARH, Dec. 24: Reaffirming his government’s focus on healthcare and medical education, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday said the state is committed to developing its medical colleges into centres of quality treatment and learning.
The statement came after the government cleared ₹68.98 crore for infrastructure upgrades at four government medical colleges. Mann said the investment would strengthen diagnostic services, improve patient care and support students pursuing medical education.
“Punjab has a glorious legacy of producing world-class doctors,” Mann said. “Even today, a large number of students aspire to pursue medical education, and it is our duty to provide them with quality institutions and facilities.”
He said the government aims to position Punjab as a hub of medical education by improving teaching hospitals and ensuring access to modern equipment. “This will give a boost to treatment and diagnostic facilities and benefit both patients and students,” he added.
The funds will be distributed among Government Medical College, Amritsar; Government Medical College, Patiala; Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Medical Sciences in Mohali; and the PGI Satellite Centre in Ferozepur. Officials have been asked to complete development works promptly.
The chief minister said the primary objective of upgrading the colleges is to ensure that people receive reliable healthcare closer to home. “This will go a long way in ensuring the well-being of the common people through quality medical facilities,” he said.
Mann said his government would continue to invest in public healthcare and medical education. “The Punjab government is committed to this cause and will leave no stone unturned to strengthen these premier institutions,” he said.
