Punjab announces ₹1-cr aid for family of soldier killed in Ladakh accident

GURDASPUR, Aug 9 — Punjab defence services welfare minister Mohinder Bhagat on Friday announced an ex gratia grant of ₹1 crore for the family of Lance Dafadar Daljeet Singh, who was killed when a boulder struck an Army vehicle in Ladakh on July 30. The accident also claimed the life of Lt Col Bhanu Pratap Singh Mankotia of Pathankot.

Speaking at Daljeet Singh’s bhog and antim ardas at a gurdwara in Galhri village, Bhagat said, “The Punjab government stands firmly with his family in this difficult time.”

The minister said a cheque for ₹6 lakh was handed over on Friday, with the remaining ₹94 lakh to be released after completion of formalities. He also announced that Singh’s brother will be given a government job, the local government school will be renamed in his honour, and a memorial gate will be constructed at the village entrance.

Bhagat also honoured Singh’s father, Gulzar Singh, during the ceremony. Various religious and political leaders joined villagers in paying tribute to the soldier.
