CHANDIGARH, July 5 — The Punjab government is likely to convene a two-day session of the state assembly beginning July 10, with the focus expected to be on the ongoing anti-drug campaign and other legislative matters. While there has been no official announcement yet, sources indicated the government is preparing to table key discussions during the session.
A cabinet meeting has been scheduled for July 7, where the final decision on the session’s agenda and duration is expected to be taken.
The upcoming sitting follows the special one-day session held on May 5, which was called to address Punjab’s escalating water dispute with Haryana. During that session, the assembly unanimously passed a resolution asserting that “not a single drop” of Punjab’s water share from the Bhakra dam would be diverted to the neighbouring state.
Notably, the previous session was adjourned but not formally prorogued, allowing the legislature to resume without a fresh summons.
Officials familiar with the development said the state’s intensifying campaign against drug trafficking—an issue that has gained political and public momentum—will likely feature prominently in the session. Legislative business, including pending bills and policy matters, is also expected to be taken up.
Further clarity is expected after the cabinet meeting this Sunday.
