Chandigarh, October 17, 2025: A CBI court in Chandigarh on Friday remanded Punjab Deputy Inspector General of Police (Ropar Range) Harcharan Singh Bhullar to 14-day judicial custody in connection with a high-profile corruption case.

Bhullar and his alleged middleman, Kirshanu Sharda, were arrested on Thursday for allegedly demanding and accepting a ₹8 lakh bribe from a Mandi Gobindgarh scrap dealer to settle an FIR registered in 2023.

According to the CBI, the complainant alleged that Bhullar sought “monthly sewa-paani” in return for ensuring no police action against his business. The agency conducted raids at Bhullar’s residence in Sector 40, Chandigarh, recovering around ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of gold jewellery, 22 luxury watches, documents of immovable properties, keys to two luxury vehicles, locker keys, 40 litres of imported liquor, and multiple firearms with ammunition.

The FIR mentions that the DIG allegedly directed Sharda to collect the bribe through a recorded WhatsApp call, which was later verified as originating from Bhullar’s number. The case has been registered under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Son of former Punjab DGP M.S. Bhullar, the officer has previously held key postings including DIG (Patiala Range), Joint Director of the Vigilance Bureau, and SSP in multiple districts. He also headed a Special Investigation Team probing the drug case against Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and was part of the state’s anti-drug campaign, ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’.
