Chandigarh, Sept 12 — With water levels slowly receding, district administrations in Punjab have begun girdwari (revenue surveys) to assess crop, property, and livestock losses from the recent floods, paving the way for compensation to affected families.
In Sangrur, officials said 6,560 hectares were inundated, affecting 107 villages. District revenue officer Gurleen Kaur said assessments would only be finalised once water fully recedes. Deputy commissioner (DC) Rahul Chaba reported one human fatality and three animal deaths. Infrastructure damage includes 32 cattle sheds destroyed, 24 mud houses ruined, 19 severely damaged and 144 partially affected. Roofs of 102 concrete houses collapsed, while 186 suffered severe structural damage and 89 partial damage. Chaba assured that compensation for the deceased would be released upon receipt of the death certificate.
In Barnala, 121 villages were affected, leaving five people and 27 animals dead. DC T Benith said ₹4 lakh compensation had already been disbursed to the families of the deceased. Barnala’s tally included 151 concrete and 17 mud houses completely destroyed, while 477 concrete and 56 mud houses suffered major damage. He said assessment of remaining livestock and household losses is ongoing.
In Kapurthala, 145 villages were impacted, with preliminary reports pointing to crop loss on 43,426 acres. DC Amit Kumar Panchal said multiple teams had been deployed in Sultanpur Lodhi and Bholath to survey losses, including government property.
In Hoshiarpur, 20,564 acres across 286 villages were hit.
In Ferozepur, DC Deepshikha Sharma said patwaris and field staff are visiting villages to document damage. While roads and embankments are being repaired on priority, she noted that farmland remains buried under 3–4 feet of sand in villages such as Nihalewala, Kamalwala, Tendi Wala and Kalu Wala. Earthen houses in Bandala and Kaleke have collapsed, leaving families homeless.
In Fazilka, officials said surveys had started, but many Sutlej-side villages remain waterlogged, delaying assessments.
