Punjab Earmarks ₹245 Crore Scholarship for SC Students

CHANDIGARH, June 28 —Taking a major step toward educational empowerment of Scheduled Caste students, the Punjab Government has allocated ₹245 crore for the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for the financial year 2025–26. The scheme aims to benefit 2.7 lakh SC students across the state this year, providing critical financial support for higher education.

Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur announced the provision on Friday, noting the government’s commitment to the social and educational upliftment of marginalized communities. “This scheme will significantly help improve the living standards of Scheduled Caste students and offer them a better chance at academic and professional success,” she said.

During the previous financial year, the scheme had benefited 2,36,575 students, with the government disbursing ₹266.57 crore, according to official records. Dr. Kaur said the performance under the scheme has shown that consistent financial support opens doors for thousands of students to pursue higher studies and eventually secure jobs in government and private sectors or succeed in entrepreneurship.

The minister also announced that the Dr Ambedkar Scholarship Portal will soon be reopened to facilitate online applications for the 2025–26 session. In addition, awareness camps will be held at the district level to educate students and institutions about the application process and eligibility requirements.

“This scheme is not merely about financial aid. It is a strong platform for SC students to build a bright future. Many have gone on to achieve high positions in government services, education, and business,” Dr. Kaur added.

Officials say the scheme continues to be a flagship initiative in bridging the socio-educational gap among disadvantaged groups in Punjab and aligns with the state’s broader inclusion and welfare policies.
