Chandigarh, October 24: Seeking to reconnect Punjab’s youth with their spiritual heritage, the Mann government has announced a month-long series of educational events to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, revered as Hind Di Chadar (Shield of India).
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the initiative would be observed across all universities and colleges, both government and private, between October 27 and November 30. “Through these programs, we want our young generation to know the life and sacrifice of Guru Sahib, who gave his life defending truth and humanity,” Bains said while unveiling the plan.
The Education Department has issued detailed instructions to all institutions, directing them to maintain decorum and ensure the sanctity of the commemorations. Officials said special seminars and lectures would explore Guru Tegh Bahadur’s teachings on freedom of faith, compassion, and fearlessness, and how they remain relevant in modern times.
“The objective is to make education not just about degrees but about building character and values,” Bains said. “Our youth must grow with a sense of moral responsibility and spiritual strength.”
The government’s move has been described as a “visionary step” by educationists, who say the initiative could help young people reconnect with Punjab’s deeper historical identity. “This is about instilling pride in our heritage,” said a senior academic from Punjabi University.
The Mann government has maintained that such efforts are vital to strengthening cultural roots and countering the erosion of values among youth. “Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s life stands as an eternal example of sacrifice for truth and humanity,” Bains said. “Our youth should draw inspiration from that courage.”
