Punjab on Flood Alert

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, August 7 — With water levels in Punjab’s major dams steadily rising after heavy rainfall in upstream hilly areas, the state government has activated round-the-clock control rooms in all 23 districts to prepare for potential flooding.

A senior government official said that flood-prone and sensitive zones are under constant watch. “Control rooms are operational in every district, and junior engineers have been assigned to oversee them,” the official stated. “Real-time monitoring of rivers and drainage systems is underway, especially in vulnerable areas.”

Although dam levels remain below their respective danger marks, authorities are closely watching the slow and continuous rise. On Thursday, the Bhakra Dam recorded a level of 1,637.4 feet, nearing its full capacity of 1,680 feet. The Pong Dam stood at 1,373.08 feet against its maximum of 1,390 feet, while the Ranjit Sagar Dam reached 1,694.64 feet out of a possible 1,731.55 feet.

Deputy commissioners across the state have been instructed to remain alert and be prepared to issue timely warnings. “Precautionary measures are in place, and teams are ready to respond if needed,” an official source said.

The administration is also coordinating with the irrigation and power departments to ensure early action in case water discharge becomes necessary.

With monsoon conditions expected to persist, authorities are focusing on readiness and communication to avoid any last-minute chaos.
