CHANDIGARH, Aug 3 — In the run-up to Independence Day, the Punjab Police has launched a fortnight-long state-wide operation to keep a close watch on criminal and anti-social elements.
Under the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, all Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been instructed to tighten security, step up patrolling, and conduct night domination operations across districts.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said multiple operations will be carried out during the two-week period — including anti-terrorist and anti-gangster actions, jail inspections, strategic checkpoints, and combing operations.
Police officers have also been directed to maintain heightened vigil at public places, increase surveillance in sensitive areas, and check a maximum number of vehicles at nakas to deter any potential terrorist or criminal activities.
Meanwhile, the cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs continued for the 154th consecutive day on Saturday, with raids conducted at 481 locations across Punjab.
As many as 107 drug smugglers were arrested and 80 FIRs registered. The operation also led to the recovery of 13.9 kg heroin, 500 gm opium, and ₹34,820 in drug-related cash.
Over 180 police teams involving 1,300 personnel and supervised by 87 gazetted officers carried out the statewide raids. A total of 511 suspicious individuals were checked during the day-long operation.
With this, the number of drug smugglers arrested in the ongoing drive has reached 24,325 in 154 days, police said.
