Punjab Police Partners With IIT Ropar for AI-Driven Crime Combat

New initiative to digitize criminal records and track international gangster networks through advanced data analytics

by TheReportingTimes

MOHALI, April 17 — The Punjab government has announced a strategic partnership between the Punjab Police and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the state’s law enforcement framework. This collaboration is designed to modernize the crackdown on organized crime and narcotics by transforming how criminal data is stored and analyzed.

Under the new agreement, IIT Ropar will develop specialized software featuring voice recognition and predictive analytics. The primary goal is to dismantle complex gangster networks, including those operated by individuals located outside of India. A central Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit, based at AIMS Mohali, will oversee the coordination between technical experts and police investigators.

A senior Punjab Police official stated that the integration of Machine Learning will allow the force to stay ahead of criminal elements. The official maintained that gangsters often recruit local youth from abroad to carry out illicit activities, and the new AI tools will improve the ability of the police to “spot and stop” these individuals. The official affirmed that the project creates a bridge between different types of data, ensuring that critical information is no longer siloed.

The project specifically addresses the challenge of unstructured data. Currently, a significant portion of police records consists of handwritten notes and scanned documents that are difficult to search. The AI system will digitize these records, merging them with existing databases to create a unified platform. This shift is intended to make detailed information on suspects available to officers with a single click.

Authorities noted that this technological leap is a core component of the ongoing ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ and ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaigns. By converting scattered reports into actionable intelligence, the Punjab government aims to enhance public safety and accelerate the speed of criminal investigations across the state.
