Punjab restructures health education governance under BFUHS

Four government hospitals handed over to university for administrative management

Faridkot, Feb 13: Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has assumed full control of all healthcare and pharmacy education in Punjab, following a major policy shift by the state government. The Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training issued an order transferring these responsibilities to the Faridkot-based university to streamline medical training.

The transition affects various programs formerly governed by IKG Punjab Technical University and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University. This centralized model ensures that all paramedical and pharmacy courses now operate under a single specialized medical authority rather than a general technical department.

“The shift is in accordance with the university’s statutes,” Dr. Rajiv Sood, Vice-Chancellor of BFUHS, mentioned while discussing the new mandate. He noted that the university has recently seen a surge in faculty recruitment and infrastructure upgrades, making it better equipped to handle this expanded role.

The Punjab government has also integrated clinical services with academic training by placing four health institutions under BFUHS management. These facilities, located in Badal, Sri Khadur Sahib, Jalalabad, and Fazilka, will serve as hubs for both public healthcare and student training. The university now holds the power to hire its own healthcare professionals to staff these centers.

Regarding the future of the university’s reach, Dr. Sood said that BFUHS is prioritizing the growth of nursing colleges. He mentioned that several government nursing institutions are already operational under this new administrative framework, with more currently in the development phase.
