Gurdaspur, Apr 5 — Punjab Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak on Saturday reviewed wheat procurement arrangements for four Majha region districts—Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, and Tarn Taran—during a meeting held at Panchayat Bhawan, Gurdaspur.

Kataruchak said the Punjab government had set a target of procuring 124 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat this season, with extensive arrangements made for over 8 lakh farmers across the state.

“To ensure smooth procurement, we have already secured a cash credit limit of Rs 28,894 crore,” the minister said. “Farmers will receive payments within 24 hours of procurement, and no official is to take leave without valid reason during this critical period.”

He noted that 1,864 regular procurement centres (mandis) have been established along with around 600 temporary centres, owing to a bumper crop this year.

Breaking down the expected arrivals in the Majha region, Kataruchak said, “Gurdaspur is expecting 6.69 lakh metric tonnes, Amritsar 7.54 lakh metric tonnes, Tarn Taran 7.76 lakh metric tonnes, and Pathankot 0.73 lakh metric tonnes.”

The minister also emphasized farmer welfare at the mandis. “Special arrangements for clean drinking water, bathrooms, electricity, and cleanliness have been made. First-aid medical kits must be available, and commission agents have been directed to ensure tarpaulins and other facilities are in place.”

Reviewing preparations, he instructed all procurement staff to remain at their designated stations until the end of the season. “Just like last year, we’re committed to making this season hassle-free for farmers,” he added.

District officials briefed the minister on procurement readiness, and Kataruchak reiterated the government’s aim to maintain efficiency and transparency throughout the procurement process.
