Punjab to Scale Up ‘Nasha Mukti Yatra’ Campaign

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 30 — With its ‘Nasha Mukti Yatra’ campaign underway, the Punjab government announced that the anti-drug initiative will be significantly expanded through May and June to cover every village and municipal ward across the state.

A spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s Office said the next phase of the campaign will begin with district-level meetings from May 2 to 4, held in close coordination with village defence committees (VDCs). These sessions will be chaired by state cabinet ministers and attended by sarpanches, police and civil officials, and other key local stakeholders.

“The government has taken the fight against drugs to the people, and now we’re strengthening it with deeper community involvement,” the spokesperson said.

To support the expanded rollout, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed deputy commissioners and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) to ensure that VDCs are active in all villages. In urban areas, ward defence committees (WDCs) will be formed in every municipal ward where they are currently absent.

Beginning May 7, the campaign will enter its next operational phase, featuring community-level meetings in every village and ward. These sessions, organized under a district-wise schedule, will involve local leadership and residents in coordinated efforts to monitor, prevent, and respond to drug-related activity.

“This is no longer just a government program—it’s a mass movement,” said Chief Minister Mann. “We need the public’s support to rid Punjab of drugs and give those affected a chance to rebuild their lives.”

Officials said the campaign aims to build local vigilance, foster trust with law enforcement, and create a unified front against addiction and trafficking.

The Nasha Mukti Yatra, launched earlier this year, has already seen engagement from communities across the state. The upcoming expansion is designed to ensure that no area remains untouched by the campaign’s message and reach.
