Ludhiana/Brampton Nov 26, 2025 — Guram village is in mourning after a Brampton house fire claimed five members of a local joint family, leaving relatives shaken and unsure of when the last rites will be held.
The fire, which broke out last Thursday, killed Jugraj Singh’s mother-in-law, his wife’s cousin, his unmarried sister-in-law and a young niece. His pregnant wife, Arashveer Kaur, survived by jumping off the rooftop but suffered injuries that caused her to lose her unborn child. “She had no other way to escape. The fall saved her but left her badly hurt,” said Happy Shankar, a relative.
Jugraj was the only person inside the home who managed to escape the flames. “The family had moved abroad for a better future. This tragedy is beyond anything anyone could imagine,” said former sarpanch Ranvir Singh Mehmi.
Mehmi said one of the victims was a woman from the village who could not be rescued in time. He added that several relatives in Punjab have already flown to Canada. “Everyone is devastated. The family has not decided on the last rites yet,” he noted.
