Patna/New Delhi, June 8 — State-owned RailTel Corporation of India has secured a ₹243 crore work order from the Bihar Education Project Council for supplying “student kits” to government schoolchildren across the state, according to a stock exchange filing made by the company.
The kits will be provided to students from Class 1 to Class 12 enrolled in Bihar’s government schools. The project is to be completed by August 14, 2025.
This order follows a ₹274.40 crore contract awarded to RailTel on June 4 by the Motor Vehicles Department of Maharashtra. That project involves the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) at high-risk and accident-prone spots in the Vidarbha Circle, and will run for a period of 10 years.
“Both these projects highlight RailTel’s expanding footprint across key infrastructure and public service domains,” said a RailTel official on condition of anonymity.
RailTel, a Miniratna PSU until recently, was granted ‘Navratna’ status in August 2024 by the central government. This elevated classification provides increased operational flexibility and financial autonomy, including the ability to invest up to ₹1,000 crore without prior central government approval.
“The Navratna status allows us to respond faster to large-scale tenders and execute high-value projects with greater independence,” said another company executive.
The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), under the Ministry of Finance, oversees policy matters for Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), including the granting of Navratna status. This classification is reserved for companies with strong financials and performance records.
As a specialist in ICT and broadband services, RailTel has been diversifying into e-governance, smart city projects, and digital infrastructure for public sector clients. Its recent project wins reflect the company’s strategy to leverage its technical expertise and new autonomy for broader impact.
With these two orders, RailTel’s cumulative new project value this month alone exceeds ₹500 crore, underscoring its growing role in government-driven digital and infrastructure transformation initiatives across the country.
