Jalandhar, 22 Sept — Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Raman Arora has been granted bail by a local court after spending 129 days in custody in connection with an extortion case.
Arora, who represents the Jalandhar Central Assembly constituency, was arrested on May 23 by the Vigilance Bureau. He was accused of running an extortion racket in collusion with municipal officials, allegedly targeting ongoing construction projects. Investigators said violation notices were issued to builders, who were then asked to pay bribes to settle the cases.
With the court’s order, Arora is expected to walk free later today.
The MLA’s arrest in May had triggered a political row, with opposition parties accusing the ruling AAP of shielding its leaders while the party maintained that the law would take its course.
Arora’s legal team has consistently denied the charges, calling the case politically motivated. The Vigilance Bureau, meanwhile, has not commented on whether it plans to challenge the bail order.
