RCB Lifts First IPL Trophy, But Celebrations End in Heartbreaking Stampede

Bengaluru, June 5:  There was a festive atmosphere in the city after RCB won its first IPL title after waiting for 18 seasons, which turned into grief on Wednesday. Nearly two lakh fans had gathered outside the stadium, which the police could not control. This led to chaos and 11 fans died while more than 30 were injured. The incident was so horrific that even the BCCI had to issue a statement. The board blamed the lack of preparations for the stampede on Wednesday, while the RCB team management said that the feelings of cricket lovers should be sympathized with.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed a press conference and confirmed that 11 people were killed. He also said that more than 30 people were injured. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the dead. This is not the first time in the world of sports that the celebration of a team turned into mourning. Recently, there was a ruckus in Paris during the celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) winning the Champions League for the first time, in which many people were killed. 1. 1989: 97 people died in a stampede during the FA Cup semi-final

It was 15 April 1989. The FA Cup semi-final match was being played between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest FC. This match was going on at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. 97 football fans died in the incident that happened during the match. Initially, Liverpool fans were held responsible for this incident. However, in the investigation report that came in 2016, it was found that the incident happened at Hillsborough Stadium due to the mistake of the police. Security improvements started during matches only after this incident in 1989.

2. 1982: 66 people died in violence during a match in Moscow

This incident is of 20 October 1982. The match was going on at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow between Netherlands team Haarlem and Moscow’s Spartak. During this match, about 15 thousand fans were watching the match. What happened in the stampede during the match could not be known for many years. About seven years after the incident, in 1989, Soviet media reports revealed that 60 people had died in this incident. At the same time, in some reports, the death toll was up to 350. Initially, the Soviet media blamed the Dutch team Harlem for this incident. However, later it came to light that the police had gathered the fans in a corner of the stadium. The stampede started due to the crowd increasing at one place. It is considered one of the most painful accidents in the world of sports in Russia.

3. 300 people lost their lives in Peru in 1964

It was May 24, 1964. An Olympic qualifying match was going on between Peru and Argentina in Lima, the capital of Peru. During the match, after a decision by the referee, at least two fans ran to the middle of the field. Police action on fans trying to enter the field angered other fans present in the field and violence broke out. More than 53 thousand people were present in the field at the time of the incident. More than 300 people lost their lives in this violence. At the same time, more than 500 people were injured.

In fact, in the last moments of the match, the Peruvian team was denied an attempt to score a goal. This enraged the Peruvian supporters present in the field. The fans stormed the field. The police were also attacked. The police fired tear gas shells. Due to this, many fans got stuck in the way of the exit gate. Which was closed at that time. Most of the deaths were due to suffocation.

4. Celebrations turned into mourning in Indonesia (October 1, 2022)

This incident took place at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. At the time of the incident, the match was going on between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. Arema FC’s team lost the match. Seeing their team losing, a large number of fans started running towards the field. During this, some people attacked the players. The police lathi-charged and fired tear gas shells to control the people. 125 people lost their lives in the stampede caused by this. About 42 thousand people were present in the stadium at the time of the incident.

5. Liverpool’s victory celebration turned into mourning (May 26, 2025)

Liverpool won the English Premier League title. To celebrate this, Liverpool fans took out a parade. During this, a car crushed the crowd. 27 people had to be hospitalized in this incident. Two people were seriously injured. Liverpool won the title for the first time since 2019–20. The celebration of victory turned into mourning after the Victory Parade.

6. PSG’s victory celebration turned into mourning (May 31, 2025)

Two fans died in the uproar after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the UEFA Champions League title, while a police officer fell into a coma after being seriously injured. In a match played late night on May 31, PSG crushed Italian club Inter Milan 5-0. This is PSG’s first Champions League title and after this people came out on the streets to celebrate in Paris. The 5-0 win was the biggest win of any team in the Champions League final in the last 70 years.

There was a lot of uproar over the celebration in Paris and the police had to calm the matter. Many videos of this also surfaced. According to local media reports, fans also attacked the police.
