RCB’s 10-Win Season! A New Record in Sight Before the Final

May 30, IPL 2025: In the first qualifier of IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Punjab Kings and got a direct ticket to the final. The team has reached the final for the fourth time after 2011, 2015 and 2016. However, RCB is still waiting for its first title and Virat Kohli can end the drought of IPL trophy this year. RCB team also made many records against Punjab. From the fastest chase to Phil Salt’s fastest fifty, let’s know which records Bangalore team made in this match…

1. Most wickets in powerplay this season

In IPL 2025, Bangalore team has taken the most wickets in the powerplay i.e. the first six overs. RCB has taken a total of 26 wickets in the powerplay this season. Four of these wickets came against Punjab on Thursday. After RCB, Mumbai team is in this list, which has taken 23 wickets in the first six overs this season.

2. Bhuvi is four wickets away from 200 wickets

In the match against Punjab, Bhuvneshwar Kumar took one wicket for 17 runs in two overs. He is the second highest wicket taker in IPL history. At the same time, Bhuvi is the highest wicket taker among fast bowlers. He has 196 wickets to his name. Only spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is ahead of Bhuvneshwar, who has taken 219 wickets. Sunil Narine is at number three with 192 wickets.

3. Punjab stopped at second lowest playoff score

RCB team bundled out Punjab for 101 runs in 14.1 overs. This is the second lowest score in the history of IPL playoffs. Earlier in 2008, Delhi team was restricted to 87 runs in the last four match against Rajasthan. However, then semi-finals were played, not playoffs. Playoffs started in 2011 and according to that, this is the lowest score in the playoffs.

4. Suyash joins Kumble-Watson’s club

Leg spinner Suyash Sharma took three wickets for 17 runs for RCB. He dismissed Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh and Mushir Khan. Three wickets for 17 runs is the third best bowling figure for RCB in a playoff or final four match. Earlier in 2009, former RCB spinner Anil Kumble took four wickets for 16 runs against Deccan Chargers in the final. At the same time, in the 2016 Qualifier-1, RCB’s Shane Watson took four wickets for 29 runs against Gujarat Lions. Suyash is next in the list. Apart from Suyash, Yash Dayal got two wickets and Hazelwood got three wickets. Romario Shepherd took one wicket.

5. Punjab could play the least number of overs (lost all 10 wickets)

The record of batting the least number of overs in an IPL playoff or final four match is now in the name of Punjab team. It batted for just 14.1 overs and was all out. Earlier in 2008, in the semi-finals, Delhi could bat for 16.1 overs against Rajasthan and the entire team was all out.

6. Most wins for RCB in a season

RCB has won 10 matches so far this season. If the team wins one more match, it will break its previous record of winning the most matches in a season. In 2011 too, Bangalore had won 10 matches in the entire season. RCB equaled that record. Now the team has a chance to win the final. If this happens, RCB will make a new record.

7. Salt has the fastest 50 for RCB

Phil Salt now holds the record for scoring the fastest half-century for RCB in the IPL playoffs. Salt played an unbeaten innings of 56 runs in 27 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes. He scored a half-century in 23 balls against Punjab on Thursday. Earlier this record was in the name of Chris Gayle. He scored a half-century in 25 balls against Sunrisers in the 2016 final and in 27 balls against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 in 2011.

8. Fastest target chase in the playoffs

RCB achieved the target of 102 runs with 60 balls to spare. This is the fastest target achieved in terms of balls in the IPL playoffs. Earlier in the final against Sunrisers in 2024, Kolkata achieved the target in 10.3 overs. Then there were 57 balls remaining. RCB overtook Kolkata.

What happened in the match?

Talking about the match, Royal Challengers Bangalore entered the final to be held on June 3 by defeating Punjab Kings by eight wickets in the first qualifier on Thursday with a half-century from opener Phil Salt after a brilliant performance by the bowlers. Despite losing, Punjab Kings will get another chance to reach the final, which will take on the winner of the eliminator between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier.

RCB won the toss and decided to bowl and the bowlers took full advantage of the conditions and bundled out Punjab Kings for just 101 runs in 14.1 overs. Salt then added 30 runs in 20 balls for the first wicket with Virat Kohli (12) and 54 runs in 27 balls for the second wicket with Mayank Agarwal (19) to give RCB an easy win by scoring 106 runs for two wickets in 10 overs.
