SHIMLA, July 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kangra districts starting July 6, as the state reels under relentless monsoon conditions.

The warning comes amid already severe weather in the region, with Mandi district bearing the brunt. According to official data, Mandi has recorded a staggering 426% more rainfall than normal over the past week, triggering multiple cloudbursts and flash floods.

An orange alert has also been issued for the districts of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan, Shimla, and Kullu, effective until July 9.

The weather department has cautioned residents in all affected areas to remain vigilant. “There is a high risk of landslides, mudslides, land subsidence, flash floods, and flooding in river catchment areas,” an IMD spokesperson said. Widespread damage to standing crops and horticulture is also anticipated.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid vulnerable zones, remain indoors during periods of intense rain, and stay updated through official weather advisories. Emergency response teams across districts have been put on alert.

With the monsoon season intensifying, local administrations are preparing for potential evacuations and disruptions to road connectivity and essential services.
