Relief Continues as Chandigarh Sees Dip in Temperatures

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, June 17 — The residents of Chandigarh woke up to another relatively cooler morning on Monday, marking a continued break from the searing heatwave that gripped the region for over a week. Both day and night temperatures have begun to ease, aided by overcast skies, light showers, and breezy conditions.

The maximum temperature settled at 37.4°C — just 0.3 degrees lower than the previous day — while the minimum dipped significantly to 27.7°C, nearly five degrees lower than Saturday night’s 32.7°C, which had been the hottest night of the season.

“The decline in minimum temperatures is more notable,” said an official from the Meteorological Centre Chandigarh. “Although daytime temperatures remain high, the overnight cooling has provided some relief.”

Traces of rain and moderate winds on Monday offered brief comfort across the city and surrounding areas. Meteorologists have forecast partly cloudy skies and light rain in the tricity region — Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula — through June 21, with a continued drop of 3 to 5 degrees in daytime highs expected in the next three days.

However, a yellow alert remains in place for Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana until June 22, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated spots on Sunday. “People should remain cautious during this transition period. Isolated heavy showers could affect low-lying areas,” the official added.

The regional observatory in Sector 39 recorded Monday’s highest temperature at 37.4°C, while the Indian Air Force station registered a slightly lower 37.2°C.

Despite the marginal relief, parts of Punjab and Haryana continued to sizzle. Sirsa remained the hottest location in the region with a maximum temperature of 38.4°C. In Punjab, Amritsar and Gurdaspur both reported highs of 37.5°C. Sirsa and Ludhiana also recorded the warmest minimum temperatures at 30.6°C and 32°C, respectively.

Between June 8 and 14, Chandigarh battled severe heatwave conditions, with the mercury peaking at 44°C on June 10 — the city’s hottest day this season. The return of cooler nights and subdued daytime heat since Sunday has offered a much-needed respite.

The MeT department expects temperatures across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula to range between 33°C and 36°C during the day, and 26°C to 27°C at night for the remainder of the week. Rainfall, although light, is expected to support this cooling trend.
