Return of Indian woman from Pakistan remains unclear

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Jan 7: The return of Indian national Sarabjit Kaur, also known as Noor Hussain, from Pakistan remains shrouded in uncertainty, with conflicting accounts from Pakistani authorities, media reports, and legal proceedings delaying her deportation.

Although Pakistani media outlets and social media posts claimed that Sarabjit was being deported to India through the Wagah border, she has yet to arrive, raising questions about her actual whereabouts.

According to a report published by Dawn, Pakistani authorities were unable to deport Sarabjit on Monday due to the closure of the Wagah-Attari border. “The visa of Sarabjit Kaur had expired on November 13, and legal action was initiated against her for overstaying,” the report noted.

Sarabjit had entered Pakistan in November 2025 with a group of 1,992 Sikh pilgrims to participate in celebrations marking Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. She stayed back after converting to Islam on November 5 and marrying Nasir Hussain, a resident of Lahore.

Following the expiry of her visa, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took her into custody to complete deportation formalities. Officials involved in the process said she was brought to the Wagah border but could not be handed over to Indian authorities.

Punjab (Pakistan) Minority Affairs Minister Ramesh Singh Arora told local media that Sarabjit had been sent back to India after completing legal procedures. However, officials from the Punjab Rangers contradicted this claim, stating that the border closure prevented the deportation.

According to Hindustan Times, Pakistan’s legal agencies have paused the deportation due to petitions pending in the Lahore High Court. The report said Sarabjit, 48, was arrested on January 4 and is currently lodged in a Lahore safe house under police supervision.

The couple has sought protection from the High Court, alleging harassment by Pakistani authorities, while a separate petition filed by former MLA Mahendra Pal Singh has demanded Sarabjit’s immediate return to India for violating visa norms.

With no official confirmation from Pakistani authorities, it remains unclear whether Sarabjit Kaur is being held in custody, awaiting court orders, or facing further delays in deportation.
