McLEODGANJ, July 1: Hollywood star and longtime Tibetan advocate Richard Gere arrived in McLeodganj on Tuesday to take part in the ongoing week-long celebrations commemorating the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Accompanied by his son, Homer James Jigme Gere, the Golden Globe-winning actor joined dignitaries, spiritual leaders, and well-wishers from around the world who have gathered to offer prayers for the Tibetan spiritual leader’s long life.

“I am here to celebrate His Holiness’ 90th birthday and wish him good health, strength, and compassion,” Gere told the media.

Gere, who chairs the International Campaign for Tibet and has been a vocal supporter of the Tibetan cause for decades, attended a significant religious ceremony at the Nechung Drayangling Monastery in Gangchen Kyishong — a site deeply revered by Tibetans and one that holds personal resonance for the actor.

“Nechung is one of my oldest friends,” he said, reflecting on his long association with the monastery. “This place has special meaning for both me and my son. He has even visited my home in the US. It’s always a joy to be here.”

The day’s spiritual proceedings included a powerful and rare ritual, as the Nechung Oracle — regarded as a key protector deity in Tibetan Buddhism — entered a trance state to bless officials of the Central Tibetan Administration. The ceremony, steeped in tradition, was witnessed by a large gathering of monks, devotees, and international guests, underscoring the occasion’s spiritual gravity and global importance.

The 90th birthday celebrations have become a convergence of cultures and faiths, drawing spiritual leaders from multiple religions in a show of solidarity and reverence. With the presence of global figures like Gere, the event continues to echo the Dalai Lama’s enduring message of peace, compassion, and unity.
