20 January 2025- Indian team’s star wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been made the captain of Lucknow Super Giants. Team owner Sanjiv Goenka announced this on Monday. He said that Pant will be the most successful captain in the history of the upcoming IPL. Let us tell you that Lucknow did not retain KL Rahul, who was captaining the team till the last edition. Lucknow was looking for a captain for the upcoming edition, which has now been completed in the form of Pant.
The Lucknow Super Giants team bought Pant for Rs 27 crore in the mega auction for IPL 2025. Pant thus became the highest-priced player in IPL history. He surpassed Shreyas Iyer in this matter, who was sold for Rs 26.75 crore. For the first time since 2016, Pant will be seen playing for a team other than Delhi.
Initially, there was a battle between Lucknow and RCB for Rishabh Pant. Pant entered the auction with a base price of Rs 2 crore and in a short time his price crossed Rs 10 crore. During this time Hyderabad also joined the race, but Lucknow also did not give up. Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran and Lucknow owner Sanjay Goenka kept bidding for Pant at the auction table and the price crossed 17 crores in no time.
Hyderabad and Lucknow did not stop here and the bid on Pant kept increasing. Lucknow bid Rs 20.75 crore for Pant and Hyderabad withdrew. However, Delhi used RTM. After this Lucknow offered Rs 27 crore for Pant and Delhi withdrew its hands. In this way Pant was sold for Rs 27 crore and Lucknow took him as the most expensive player of IPL.
Rishabh Pant was playing for Delhi since 2016
Pant had represented Delhi since 2016 and scored 3284 runs in 110 matches at an average of 35.31 including one century and 18 half-centuries. Pant was made the captain of the team in 2021 and led the team to the playoffs in the same season. Before the mega auction for the IPL 2025 season, Lucknow retained Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni. The last season was not good for Lucknow and the team finished seventh with 14 points with seven wins and seven losses in 14 matches.
