ZIRAKPUR, May 16— A road rage incident on the Zirakpur flyover Thursday escalated into a violent clash between a motorcyclist and Haryana Roadways bus staff, resulting in injuries to the bus driver and conductor, police said.
According to the Haryana Roadways Employees Union, the driver and conductor were allegedly attacked in full public view by the motorcyclist and his accomplices.
The injured staff members were taken to a hospital for treatment. A video of the altercation quickly made rounds on social media, drawing public attention.
“Such an attack on government employees doing their duty is unacceptable. The assailants must be held accountable,” said Sandeep Lathar, state president of the Haryana Roadways Employees Union.
The motorcyclist, identified as Balwinder Singh Walia, gave a different account.
He alleged he was en route to Chandigarh University with his daughter when the bus attempted to overtake them dangerously.
Upon protesting, Walia claims, the bus driver and conductor physically assaulted him, tore his clothes, and pulled his beard—a gesture he described as religiously offensive.
“I was humiliated in front of my child. My beard was pulled, and my faith disrespected,” Walia said in his statement to the police.
In contrast, the union alleged that Walia instigated the fight and escalated a minor issue. According to their version, Walia brandished a sword during the confrontation, injuring both the driver, identified as Amit, and conductor Himmat.
“Walia used a weapon. This was no simple argument—our staff was attacked with intent,” Lathar added, demanding strict legal action against Walia and his unidentified companions.
SHO Gagandeep Singh of the Zirakpur police station confirmed that statements from both parties had been recorded.
“We’ve received complaints from both sides, and an investigation is currently underway. Appropriate legal steps will follow based on the findings,” Singh said.
