MOSCOW, Oct 6 — Russia’s defense ministry reported on Monday that its air defense units destroyed 251 Ukrainian drones in a massive overnight assault, with the majority downed over the country’s southwest.
The ministry, reporting the figures via the Telegram messaging app, specified that 61 of the drones were shot down over the waters of the Black Sea, and one drone was intercepted while heading toward Moscow.
While the Russian ministry only reported the number of drones destroyed, not the total launched, reports from Ukrainian news channels on Telegram suggested a major impact. Specifically, these channels claimed a large fire was sparked by a drone hit on an oil depot in Feodosia, a city on the Black Sea coast of Crimea.
The Ukrainian media outlet RBK-Ukraine reported that a fuel tank at the depot exploded as a result of the attack. Reuters stated it could not independently verify these reports regarding damage in Feodosia.
The large-scale drone attack is the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian-held or Russian territory, frequently targeting military infrastructure and energy facilities.
