Kyiv, November 8: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed rescue operations in Dnipro early Saturday after Russian strikes leveled part of an apartment block, killing one person and injuring several others, including children.
“Unfortunately, one person has been killed and 11 wounded. My condolences to the family and loved ones,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X, adding that dozens had been pulled from the wreckage.
The attack on Dnipro came as part of a wider overnight bombardment that struck multiple regions. “One person was also killed in Kharkiv, and civilians were injured in Kyiv and Poltava,” Zelenskyy said. Strikes were also reported in Mykolaiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, and the Odesa region, which remained under continuous assault.
“All emergency services are on site, restoring facilities and aiding the injured,” he added.
Zelenskyy said Russia had launched “more than 450 attack drones and 45 missiles,” describing the onslaught as one of the most intense in recent weeks. He accused Moscow of deliberately targeting “civilian life, residential buildings, and energy infrastructure” as winter nears.
Ukraine’s national grid operator Ukrenergo announced nationwide power cuts after critical energy facilities were hit, warning of continued rolling blackouts.
Regional governors reported widespread damage. In Dnipropetrovsk, four civilians, including two children aged 11 and 14, were killed when a Russian missile struck a shop. In Odesa, two people died after airstrikes on trucks and vehicles. In Mykolaiv, a missile believed to be an Iskander-M with a cluster warhead killed a 20-year-old man and injured 19 others.
Zelenskyy used the attacks to call for stronger international sanctions. “Russia’s nuclear and energy sectors remain largely unsanctioned. That must change,” he said. “The Russian military-industrial complex still obtains Western microelectronics. There must be greater pressure on its oil and gas trade as well.”
He appealed for European decisions on frozen Russian assets, additional sanctions, and more aid for Ukraine’s defenses. “This is a matter of depriving Russia of the resources it uses to kill,” he stressed.
Ukraine’s military also reported striking a major Russian fuel pipeline near Moscow and an oil terminal in Tuapse, while Russia claimed to have intercepted over 160 Ukrainian drones.
In Donetsk, heavy clashes continued near Pokrovsk. Russia claimed to have eliminated Ukrainian special forces in the area—a statement Kyiv denied.
Zelenskyy concluded his address by thanking international partners for ongoing assistance. “Almost every night, Russia attacks our communities,” he said. “We are grateful to everyone who helps us protect lives and resist terror.”
