SARAS Festival in Ludhiana to Support Flood Relief

by TheReportingTimes

Ludhiana, September 16: Ludhiana is set to host the SARAS festival from October 4 at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), with this year’s edition dedicated to helping rebuild flood-affected villages in Punjab. A significant portion of the proceeds from the 10-day fair will go toward relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said the festival would combine culture, shopping, and entertainment with a social cause. “Artistes from across the country are being roped in to perform and contribute. They are certainly not coming free of cost, but we are requesting them to charge nominal so that we can donate maximum to support the worst flood-hit villages,” Jain said while reviewing preparations.

The mela’s entry ticket has been fixed at Rs 20. Decisions on ticketing for the star-studded evenings are still under discussion, with officials balancing artist fees against the relief contribution.

Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan has confirmed his participation, while Parmish Verma, Kulwinder Billa, Gippy Grewal, Ranjit Bawa, Ammy Virk, Nayab Middha, and Tanya have also agreed to perform. Organisers are also in talks with several stand-up comedians. “A share of the earnings will go towards providing relief in flood-affected areas, including assistance for loss of crops, livestock, houses and other damages,” Jain noted.

Beyond the performances, the festival will showcase nearly 1,000 exhibitors from across India, most of them rural artisans. Hundreds of stalls will be set up, with participation from rural women representing Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Products on display will include sarees, suits, woollen wear, natural foods, pottery, woodcraft, jewellery, jute items, pickles, and handicrafts.

Organisers expect large urban crowds eager to experience rural life and shop for traditional items. The mela will also feature play zones for children, competitions for students, and special facilities like cart services for senior citizens.

Other attractions include cultural programmes from different states, environment-friendly initiatives, and entertainment activities designed to make the event both enjoyable and purposeful. The festival is being held in association with the Ministry of Rural Development.
