Mumbai, 25 October 2025: Veteran actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his effortless humor and memorable performances in both television and cinema, died in Mumbai on Saturday following kidney failure. He was 74.

Producer and director Ashok Pandit confirmed Shah’s death, saying the actor was rushed to Hinduja Hospital on Saturday afternoon but passed away shortly after. “Our dear friend and wonderful actor Satish Shah is no more. He was admitted due to kidney failure and breathed his last a few hours ago. The industry has lost a gem. Om Shanti,” Pandit wrote on social media.

Once a familiar face in every Indian home, Shah had largely stayed away from films and public events in recent years. His last movie appearance was in Humshakals (2014).

Born in Mumbai on June 25, 1951, Shah trained in acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune before beginning his film career in the late 1970s. His early performances in Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastan and Gaman earned him modest attention, but it was Kundan Shah’s 1983 satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron that made him a household name. His role as the corrupt Municipal Commissioner D’Mello showcased his sharp comic timing and cemented his place among India’s most versatile performers.

During his prolific career, Shah acted in over 200 films, including Masoom, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Main Hoon Na, Chalte Chalte, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Ra.One. On television, his portrayal of Indravadan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai remains iconic.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment fraternity, with many recalling him as a “gentle soul” whose humor “brought joy to generations.”
