SGPC urges governments to safeguard Sikh religious freedoms abroad

AMRITSAR, India, Dec 21 — Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami on Sunday expressed deep concern over opposition to a Nagar Kirtan in South Auckland, New Zealand, and urged both New Zealand and Indian authorities to ensure a supportive environment for Sikh religious practices.

“The Sikh community has always contributed to global welfare, peace and tolerance,” Dhami said. “Viewing Sikh religious traditions through a lens of hatred is highly condemnable and contrary to the values of any multicultural society.”

Dhami said Sikhs have the right to observe their religious traditions freely and peacefully. He appealed to both governments to ensure that religious events are conducted safely and without intimidation.

“Religious freedom and mutual respect are the foundations of a diverse society,” he said.

Referring to the Manurewa incident, Dhami said the opposition to the Nagar Kirtan had caused distress among Sikhs living in New Zealand. He urged leading members of the Sikh community in the country to engage in dialogue with local authorities and opposing groups to resolve the matter amicably.

Dhami also supported calls for continued engagement between Sikh leaders, government officials and community representatives to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Earlier, Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj had described the opposition as an attempt to disturb communal harmony and called for firm action against those responsible.

Sikh leaders said they hope constructive dialogue and government intervention will help maintain peace and protect the rights of religious minorities abroad.
